Vivendi, Discovery among possible TVN buyers

(Reuters) - French entertainment group Vivendi and U.S. broadcaster Discovery Communications Inc. are among the five groups being invited to bid for Poland' No. 2 media group TVN, sources said.

"Both Vivendi and Discovery were contacted by (TVN's controlling shareholder) ITI," a person familiar with the discussions told Reuters on Tuesday. "The transaction should take place in the first quarter of next year."

Another source confirmed the comments.

Vivendi declined to comment on earlier media reports it was bidding, while Discovery was not immediately available.

The two sources also confirmed an earlier Reuters report that ITI Group, which has a 56 percent stake in TVN, had also reached out to Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, Time Warner and Germany's Bertelsmann.

ITI announced last week it had hired bankers to seek a buyer for TVN, which has a market capitalization of $2 billion.

TVN shares have gained as much as 8 percent since ITI's announcement. The stock fell 1.6 percent in afternoon trade on Tuesday due to wider market turmoil.

Polish media have also speculated that German media group ProSieben was among potential buyers, but the two sources said it was not contacted by ITI.

Vivendi, Europe's largest entertainment and telecom group by revenue, controls Poland's No.2 pay-TV platform Cyfra Plus.
